Kick Yourself Out of Your Comfort Zone

March 11th, 2010 by admin

One of the great things about teaching improv comedy is that I get to see people stretch themselves and do things they never thought possible. For most people, improv comedy is out of their comfort zone. Watching a person step out of their comfort zone and gradually (or sometimes even rapidly) expand their comfort zone is a wonderful thing.

This concept applies to much more than just improv comedy. Getting out of your comfort zone is vital to any kind of success and to your own development, because all success lies outside of your comfort zone. Here’s an important fact that most people never think about: unless you are 100% satisfied with everything in your life, you must get out of your comfort zone!

To rephrase that: if there is any area of your life where you are not getting the success you want and deserve, you have to get out of your comfort zone to get it.

There is a quote that sums up why this is true. “If you keep doing what you’ve always done then you’ll keep getting what you’ve always gotten.” If what you’ve always gotten (and are currently getting) is not what you want, then you need to do something different. Unfortunately, “different” is usually outside of your comfort zone. If you could just do what you were already comfortable with to achieve your success, you’d already be doing it.

The problem is that we don’t like getting out of our comfort zones. The word “comfort” is used deliberately. That means that getting out of your comfort zone is “uncomfortable.” Naturally, we don’t like to be uncomfortable.

The mentality that keeps us in our comfort zone is subtle though, and often comes up in the form of avoidance. That is, we don’t say, “I could have what I want, it’s just that it’s outside of my comfort zone.” Instead we blame externalities, “If people would just hire me then my business would be successful,” or we limit ourselves, “Oh, I could never do that.” In the worst case, we ignore it all together. We don’t think about what we want or could have, and we refuse to talk about. It remains a dream buried deep down in the back of our heads for years (regrettably, sometimes forever).

In my years of doing improvisational comedy, I hear the same suggestions over and over (audiences love to yell, “bathroom” for a location and “spatula” for an object – don’t ask me why!). There is a strong temptation to “re-use” old material. If I have done a joke or scene based on that suggestion previously, I may want to repeat it since I know it worked before. In fact, I have seen many; many improvisers go down this route. Re-doing on old scene is a classic “comfort zone” technique.

I learned early on however that a joke or scene never works as well the second time around. In improv, it’s the act of doing something new (stepping out of the comfort zone) that increases the enjoyment and quality. Once it has been done and is comfortable, something is missing.

Life works the same way. Staying in the comfort zone feels safe and good, but the quality is never the same. If there is *any* are of your life that you want to improve, then you must get out of your comfort zone!

50 First Dates (Widescreen Special Edition) Review

50 first dates was one of the big romantic comedies of this year. It contains big actors and it had major marketing behind it. I’m pretty neutral when it comes to Adam Sandler because he has couple of decent comedies but many very bad also. Drew Barrymore has convinced me just once in a good comedy (The Wedding Singer), and that one time she acted with Adam Sandler so I started watching this movie with little expectation. Movie was following pretty normal comedy line. It was made with certain formula, kind a like that it have to please a certain amount of audience. In itself it’s not that bad thing, the movie was sometime funny but it didn’t bring anything new to the comedy field. Also it shows that makers have to put a brake on some of the jokes just to keep the movie in that certain formula.(when they learn to make movies in more artistic way and less with dollar bills in their eyes –> I bet that the movies would be much better and they would have as much as audience than they have now, or ever more?) But now, back to the review: I found 50 First dates a bit of sad movie. There are couples of things witch made tears in my eyes and made me feel sorry for the character. It might have been better idea to make a drama from the movie because it handles such a `dramatic?’ subject. Memory loss might have been a funny idea in a text but at the latest at the filming the makers have understood that it really isn’t that funny. So the result is that the movie is little confusing mixing basic Adam Sandler humor to the dramatic things. Somebody should have just leash Sandler and make an effort to make the movie a decent drama. Although movie shows couple of pretty funny characters and couple of over top ones. There are also funny animal jokes and overall the movie runs pretty fluently. Idea of the film is interesting and not so often used. Adam Sandler is making a little tamed version of his usual `goofy’ character and is giving an ok performance. Drew Barrymore is a real actress and gives her character a little more deep and realistic interpretation spiced with little sad tone. I liked it. Because this is a `Adam Sandler’ movie it of course includes a funny beating scene and Rob Schneider in a funny minor role.

50 First Dates (Widescreen Special Edition) Overview

A young man meets his soulmate who suffers from a memory disorder which wipes her memory clean each evening.
Genre: Feature Film-Comedy
Rating: PG13
Release Date: 7-FEB-2006
Media Type: DVD

50 First Dates (Widescreen Special Edition) Specifications

With generous amounts of good luck and good timing, 50 First Dates set an all-time box-office record for the opening weekend of a romantic comedy; whether it deserved such a bonanza is another issue altogether. It’s a sweet-natured vehicle for sweet-natured stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and their track record with The Wedding Singer no doubt factors in its lowbrow appeal. But while the well-matched lovebirds wrestle with a gimmicky plot (she has no short-term memory, so he has to treat every encounter as their first), director Peter Segal (who directed Sandler in Anger Management) ignores the intriguing potential of their predicament (think Memento meets Groundhog Day) and peppers the proceedings with the kind of juvenile humor that Sandler fans have come to expect. The movie sneaks in a few heartfelt moments amidst its inviting Hawaiian locations, and that trained walrus is charmingly impressive, but you can’t quite shake the feeling that too many good opportunities were squandered in favor of easy laughs. Like Barrymore’s character, you might find yourself forgetting this movie shortly after you’ve seen it. –Jeff Shannon

Cute, tender… but irritating! – Robert Schmidt – Honolulu, HI & Logan, UT USA
Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) is a womanizing veterinarian working on Oahu and preying on visiting tourists. Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore) is a school teacher who suffered a traumatic head injury that results in her keeping her long-term memories prior to the accident, but wipes her short=term memories clean every 24 hours.

Roth falls for her, but finds himself having to get her to like him every day… 50+ first dates! Sandler and Barrymore demonstrate a mutual chemistry that makes you believe they like each other! And the secondary characters in this film, from Whitmore’s father and steriod-using brother to

This is a cute romantic comedy, but Adam Sandler’s crude banter got a bit tedious for a character supposed to be tender and supportive. This persona fits him perfectly in, say, Happy Gilmore. However, it is a leap to expect that a philander changes his lifestyle so abruptly. Ah, Hollywood! And there is a strangeness with the secondary characters in this film. Lucy Whitmore’s father and steriod-using brother, as well as the employees at the cafe where Lucy goes every Sunday (and for Lucy, now every day is that Sunday)\) are so caring and protective of Lucy. Henry Roth’s friends, however, are crude or… strange.

Still, it was a fun movie to watch, and the ending is surprising and upbeat.

50 first dates – Josh L. Thomure – Centralia Wa USA
This movie is hilarious. I t will have you on the floor rolling around in laughter in no time. Wonderful movie. Adam Sandler is a great actor and producer. You will thoroughly enjoy this movie.

50 First Dates [Blu-ray] – Arnita D. Brown – USA
Henry Roth lives in a Hawaiian paradise with the company of endless women with no strings attached. This is until he meets Lucy Whitmore. Both Henry and Lucy enjoy the company of each other and feels the start of a serious relationship occurring. Approaching Lucy the next day, Henry is confused when Lucy fails to recognise him. This is the moment Henry discovers that Lucy actually suffers from short term memory loss and can’t remember each individual day. Henry won’t let this stop him and is prepared to make her fall in love with him all over again, each and every day. The plot, even if somewhat contrived, is clever and in the context of the movie believable: there is a good beginning, middle and surprisingly satisfying end. This is quite simply a very enjoyable movie. It’s not, perhaps, a great movie, but it is fun and leave you feeling pleasantly content.

More great Drew/Adam chemistry – Dr. Doodle – Washington State
Very well done. A funny movie with some great messages. And of course a great value from Amazon.

Screwballs Review

As someone who grew up in the ’80s I love the horror and sex comedies, after all my favorite comedy is Porky’s. I have been waiting for Screwballs to come out on dvd since dvd first came out, same goes for Hot Resort, Army Brats, Bad Manners, Hot Pacific Banana are just a few I’m still waiting for. Also cheaper on Blu Ray than dvd? Although being an older movie I don’t think the quality will be much different still if you enjoy movies like Porky’s, Private Resort, Hardbodies and other raunch comedies you need to see this move.

Quality wasn’t what I would expect from a Blu-Ray transfer. – Seattle Samurai – Kirkland, WA United States
I tried to enjoy this movie but there just wasn’t the quality I would expect and it was just plain silly. I probably won’t watch this one more than the one time.

What Blu-ray? The transfer looks only a tad better than VHS – A. Peled – Battery Park, NY
What a disappointment. There is not even one good thing I can say about this retro movie. Ugly actors, unfunny and childish jokes, and very little “sex” factor. The American Pie franchise is much better, and for better sexy comedies, I vote first for “Cote D’Azur (2005)”, then for Tinto Brass’s movies.

Fun! Stupid! Cliche! Satirical! Juvenile! These words would appear in a long review. Watch it and enjoy it! The bowling ball scene is priceless. So is the drive-in scene. EVERY scene really.

The Gypsy Warriors – Don’t waste your money – Michael T. Faucher –
I like Tom Selleck, but this movie is very poor. If you look closely at one of the night scenes, you can see the World Trade Center – the two towers – in the back ground. Duh! The towers were not around during WWII.

not what I expected – Geri H. Ball –
I am a fan of Tom Selleck and have purchased most of the available DVDs he has been featured or associated with. When I saw the photo on The Gypsy Warriors I was intersted and read what little data that was offered… little information and no story line or teaser that told the fact that this was more or less a tv show expanded to a less than satisfying waste of time and money. I would classify it as a C story and a C+ for acting. It is one of those cases where: “if you have never heard of the movie there is a good reason”. My one consolation is that the service to get it was good, and the price was less than going to the theater. Would I recommend it to a friend? No, but I will keep it on my shelf as reminder to look closer before I leap.

Dave – David D. Brezinski – Streamwood, Illinois USA
The worst war movie ever filmed and I’m sure one Tom Selleck (one of my very favorite actors) wishes he’d never done. I only gave it one star because I could not rate it with none. A true STINKER!!!

Classicaly Bad – Roy B. Blood – Reno, NV USA
We are fans of Tom Selleck. He is not a great actor but a wonderful personality. In this movie his performance, when compared to the rest of the cast, is of Oscar quality. The direction and camera work are as bad as they get. The script was found in someones trash.

1. Fruit In Your Looms

Someone once said something along the lines that, Monty Python is to ‘funny’ what chartered accountants are to ‘boring’. Who are we to disagree?

2. Python’s Give Live Birth

The legend of Monty Python emerged nobly from the dusty corridors of Oxford and Cambridge universities. All of the British Python members had their comedic starts in revue shows put on by these universities. They soon rose to the ranks of responsibility within these societies, “In bewilderment we saw a notice board informing us that we are now officers!” recalls John Cleese. Their well-received show, A Clump of Plinths, transferred to London’s West End and later visited New Zealand and New York under the new title Cambridge Circus.

Cleese stayed on in New York and during a photo shoot for a comic strip he met American illustrator Terry Gilliam. Terry was soon folded into the every growing omelet.

The BBC, on the advice of producer Barry Took, signed the group – which now included Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam for a 13-show series. Ah, but what to name the show?

3. The Toad Elevating Moment

Owl Stretching Time. A Horse, A Spoon and A Bucket. The Toad Elevating Moment were all names in the running. But as planning for the series became more chaotic, the BBC management began to refer to the team as a ‘flying circus’, inspired by the Red Baron’s World War One fighter squadron. The troupe liked the sound of it and randomly added the term Monty Python from their growing list of alternates. Funny that.

4. Mystery Of The Lost Python Sketches

No one knows what happened to them.

Oh wait, 3 new sketches of never before seen Python material were recently discovered and performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The famed sketches were written by late Python star Graham Chapman and were unearthed by a literary executor in Los Angeles. Each sketch lasts four minutes and features a cast of characters including a gay parrot and an overworked Messiah.

5. Brian’s The Life Of The Party

Monty Python’s Life of Brian snagged the funniest film of all time in a poll arranged by Total Film magazine.

The film satires the rise of organized religion and caused more controversy than a Kevin Smith baptismal when it was released back in 1979. It was banned in many parts of the UK and church leaders accused it of blasphemy. Nothing like bad publicity to push the ratings.

Their King Arthur era spoof, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, trailed by only a few spots, landing it at number five.

6. Kim Bread Aka John Cleese

John Cleese rode a roller coaster of fame during the 1970’s playing the role of stressed hotelkeeper Basil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers. He continued his fame with films like Privates On Parade and Clockwise, then hit worldwide stardom with a A Fish Called Wanda in 1988. The follow-up film, Fierce Creatures faulted to gain attention with audiences. These days audiences know him best as the new Q in the James Bond films and Nearly Headless Ned in the Harry Potter films. He will next be seen playing father to Lucy Liu in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and as the voice Fiona’s Father in Shrek 2, Fiona is voiced by Charlie’s Angel’s co-star Cameron Diaz.

7. Around The World In 80 Days

Michael Palin has also rocketed to fame due to his turn with the troupe and in 1977 he teamed with Terry Jones to make their own comedy series, Ripping Yarns. Michael also appeared aside John Cleese in A Fish Called Wanda, then went on to do a reality show for BBC TV, called Around the World in 80 Days, where he attempted to literally follow in the footsteps of the Jules Verne literary character, Phileas Fogg, by trying to travel around the world in the allotted time, but without flying – By the way, it’s Jules Verne’s 175th birthday this week. During the Pole to Pole trip, he met up with Python fans in Greece and ate snake in China while struggling to meet his deadline.

8. Get Yourself To Mars

Eric Idle continued his stint in the limelight by teaming with Neil Innes to create Rutland Weekend Television, a parody of regional broadcasting. He later appeared in Graham Chapman’s Yellowbeard, Disney’s Honey, I Shrunk the Audience and Splitting Heirs. His recent novel titled, “The Road to Mars” is about two comedians in the 22nd century. Fans most likely know him today as the voice of Mr. Vosknocker in the animated film, South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut.

9. Keep It Real

Terry Jones maintained a diversity beyond mere comedy, by writing about history, presenting documentaries, penning children’s books and going onto direct the 1996 version of Wind in the Willows, starring his old pals – Michael Palin, John Cleese and Eric Idle.

10. The 12 Fisher Monkey Kings

Terry Gilliam lent his talents to the troupe as a director and by creating the very distinct animations that became Monty Python’s visual trademark. We soon followed it with his feature film debut, Jabberwocky, starring Michael Palin. After helming the much loved, Time Bandits, his fame skyrocketed in Hollywood. But his style led to many conflictions in the biz including a big throw down with Universal Studios over his film Brazil and then problems with backers on the very expensive, Adventures of Baron Munchausen, which starred Eric Idle and featured Robin Williams.

His real success followed by taking on unconventional studio films including the critically acclaimed, The Fisher King starring Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges and the stylistic sci-fi thriller, 12 Monkeys starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt and the Hunter S Thompson extravaganza, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro. These six actors all gave some of the best performances of their career in Gilliam’s films.

11. Parting Shots

“We weren’t being satirical because it wasn’t the thing that interested us,” Terry Jones says. “Ours was a slightly more abstract humor – just being silly really. What satire there is, is more generalized satire.”

Referring to The Life of Brian – “Comedy is about reminding us of the truth of being human: we all have a body and we all must die, and it is okay,” reckons Eric Idle.

“Monty Python is a great combination of intellect and silly”, concludes Robin Williams.

TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Comedy (Arsenic and Old Lace / A Night at the Opera / The Long Long Trailer / Father of the Bride 1950) Review

This collection contains four very different comedies from four very different types of comics. It is part of over a dozen sets produced by Warner Home Video to bring classic film to the masses by making inexpensive sets of the better films in their libraries that have no extra features.

The oldest in the bunch, “A Night at the Opera” (1935), revived the career of the Marx Brothers after they were released from their contract at Paramount. Irving Thalberg thought that the brothers’ comedy still had merit and that part of their problem was that “they never helped anybody”. The test of time has shown that, although not profitable at the time, the Paramount Marx comedies were the best film work that the brothers did. However, that doesn’t mean that this film isn’t great. It is also available in a more deluxe form in the collection The Marx Brothers Collection (A Night at The Opera/A Day at The Races/A Night in Casablanca/Room Service/At the Circus/Go West/The Big Store).

“Arsenic and Old Lace” (1944) stars Cary Grant in a classic dark comedy. Grant plays a newlywed who finds out that his aunts have made a habit of poisoning their elderly male boarders and burying them in the cellar. This has only been available in the past as a single DVD, and it is an older one at that – released in 2000 I believe.

“Father of the Bride” (1950) has Spencer Tracy as a man who begins to feel his age and his pocketbook when his daughter (Elizabeth Taylor) gets married. It shows Tracy has a knack for comedy even if Katharine Hepburn is not involved. This is available in a more deluxe edition in the now out of print The Elizabeth Taylor Signature Collection (National Velvet / Father of the Bride / Cat on a Hot Tin Roof / Butterfield 8).

Finally there is “The Long Long Trailer” from 1954. Made to capitalize on the popularity of the TV series “I Love Lucy”, the film is pretty funny in its own right even it is basically Lucy and Desi playing their TV characters under other names. The two play newlyweds who buy a motor home instead of a house and almost ruin their marriage by going on a cross-America trek in the thing. This is also available in The Lucy & Desi Collection (Too Many Girls / The Long Long Trailer / Forever, Darling). By and large I don’t think that the movies ever figured out what to do with Lucille Ball, but this is one of her better efforts in film.

TCM Greatest Classic Films Collection: Comedy (Arsenic and Old Lace / A Night at the Opera / The Long Long Trailer / Father of the Bride 1950) Overview

ARSENIC AND OLD LACE Cary Grant and a stellar cast romp through this classic farce based on the Broadway hit and breezily directed by Frank Capra. A frazzled drama critic’s two maiden aunts put a secret ingredient in their elderberry wine – and the resulting circus is howlingly hilarious, with a comically rubber-faced, rubber-legged Grant in the center ring. A NIGHT AT THE OPERA Grand opera equals grand comedy as the Marx Brothers cram a ship’s stateroom and more with wall-to-wall gags, one-liners, musical riffs and two hard-boiled eggs – all while skewering pompous schemes to sabotage an opera production. “Arguably their finest film” (4 Star Rating! – Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide). THE LONG, LONG TRAILER Anyone know how to park this thing? Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz play newlyweds who hit the honeymoon road with a 40-foot house trailer in tow in this slaphappily-ever-after comedy directed by Vincente Minnelli. FATHER OF THE BRIDE (1950) Spencer Tracy is the father and Elizabeth Taylor the bride in this comic celebration of an American rite (and wrongs) of passage. Here comes the bride, there goes dad’s wallet…and everyone’s heart. What sparkling fun!

A note on subtitles – Marie – Kennesaw, GA USA
The movies were great!! I have more comments about how they were packaged because it was different that I had expected.
I bought these for my elderly mother who lives with me, so my review is based on using these for a senior person.
The titles were in extremely tiny print stamped around the center hole. Very hard to read.
The subtitles were created in white w/o a black box around them — this made it hard to read them — especially if the film was black and white!! Most subtitles come with a black box in which the subtitle is reversed out to white — same as the TV — which makes it much easier to read. Caring for a senior makes me much more aware of all the small things that affect their independence. Ease of use, larger type on the packaging and a visually enhanced subtitle would improve the use of these for that population immensely. Thanks!!

Very Disappointing – Autodidact – LA
Although it says on the back of the case “Presented in a format preserving the aspect ratio of their original theatrical exhibitions,” these movies are panned and scanned. I expect much more from TCM.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Single-Disc Edition) Review

Seems to be another hit with the grandkids! They are 5 & 7 and they sat and hardly moved for the entire movie! Only gave it 4 stars because I still don’t think it’s in the same league as Shrek, Nemo, Ice Age etc… Just a nice cute movie.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Single-Disc Edition) Overview

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs tells the story of an eccentric wannabe scientist, Flint Lockwood. His latest contraption is a miraculous device designed to solve the world hunger crisis. But when Flint bites off more than he can chew, he sets in motion a global disaster of epic proportions. Based on the #1 best-selling book by Judi and Ron Barrett

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Single-Disc Edition) Specifications

Judi and Ron Barrett’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a much-loved, whimsical book about a tiny island where food falls from the sky like rain. The book serves as a jumping-off point for Sony’s animated, digital 3-D Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs which is not so much a retelling of the book as an exploration of what makes food rain from the sky on a small island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Flint (Bill Hader), a clever young inventor with a reputation for creations gone awry, has recently completed a machine that he claims will turn water into food. Like his past failed inventions, Flint’s new food-converting machine doesn’t work as planned, and on its initial test run it ends up getting launched into the sky where clouds form and begin to rain cheeseburgers. The falling burgers destroy the Swallow Falls community’s latest attempt to bolster its failing, sardine-dependent economy, but the Mayor’s (Bruce Campbell) initial fury quickly turns to greedy anticipation as he begins to realize that food falling from the sky could serve as an innovative tourist draw. As the entire town is caught up re-defining itself as “Chew and Swallow,” only Flint’s father (James Caan) remains skeptical of his son’s invention. Greed leads to some very strange weather events like spaghetti twisters and extra-giant food which, while providing a huge career opportunity for brainy weather intern Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) who’s masquerading as an air-headed television personality, also threaten to destroy the town and its inhabitants. In the end, only the collaborative efforts of Flint, his father, and Sam can save the town of Chew and Swallow from certain destruction by the out of control invention. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a funny, imaginative film that’s well-animated and immensely entertaining for kids and adults. Rated PG for brief mild language, but appropriate for most ages 5 and older. –Tami Horiuchi

Not for kids… – SH – Honolulu, HI United States
I disagree with the reviewer that said this was not for adults & more geared towards kids … this movie could not hold my son’s or my nephews attention at all, they were so bored that they ended up leaving to go play instead of sitting to watch this!

The only thing geared towards kids was the graphics & animation … our kids thought the story was boring & they are not at all interested in watching it again.

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs – Leroy Hart – Wooster OH
It was a good movie. I would rate it a 7, not really something adults would enjoy. More for children.

A new 1960 Bob Hair Cut for 2006

February 28th, 2010 by admin

Before you cut your hair bob in 1920, women were confined to the hairstyles that were swept with long or thick with combs worn with hairnets to keep their beloved curls. In 1920, everything changed when the bonds were the Victorian style.

With the war, women were finally able to wear their hair short, thanks to the actions of Irene Castle, silent-screen actress who started this popular hairstyle in 1917 to help the war effort. Red Skelton: Christmas Review

A very nice DVD collection. Unlike most of the Red Skelton DVDs, this is authorized by the Red Skelton Estate. The main episode, “The Plight Before Christmas,” is in color, co-starring Greer Garson. In a nutshell, Freddie the Freeloader has a run-in with the law, escapes, and helps a flower lady escape as well. The flower lady is the actress Greer Garson in stage makeup, who later returns the favor by allowing the hobos to hold their annual Christmas program in her theater – a benefit for orphans. Nicely done, with some good Freddy the Freeloader moments, Red pantomiming, and just plain good entertainment. One nice piece of trivia: at the beginning, the action takes place in front of Valentina’s Antique Shop — Valentina is Red’s daughter. The other features are in black and white, and include “Christmas with the Skeltons,” where Red’s various character (Clem Kadiddlehopper, Willy LumpLump, Cauliflower McPugg and Deadeye) drop by the Skelton home to wish seasons’ greetings, including an appearance by Red’s real-life wife, son Richard and daughter Valentina. Another Christmas episode is based on O. Henry’s “The Cop and the Anthem,” dealing with Freddie the Freeloader trying (& failing) to get arrested on Christmas Eve in order to have a warm place to stay the winter – heartwarming, and one of my favorite episodes of all time.

However, this “Christmas” DVD also has other holiday goodies, including Red Skelton’s famous recitation & explanation of the Pledge of Allegiance, two Thanksgiving skits (one hilarious with Clem Kadiddlehopper, one less so).

In short, this 130 minute DVD is packed, and a bargain to boot. I enjoy it, and recommend it.

(In case you’re wondering, the only thing that prevents me from giving it 5 stars is that it includes highlights from another excellent Christmas program, “Freddy and the Yuletide Doll” — had they included that entire program, I would have given it an enthusiastic 5 stars.)

Red’s Christmas specials – J. Haase – Tacoma, WA United States
I just recently rewatched this dvd and as I am a fan of Red’s clown Freddie, enjoyed it alot, the other items on the dvd didn’t hold my attention as much hence only 4 stars. Another reviewer commented that it was dated, citing a reference to Cassius Clay, he thought it came out in 1981 but I remember seeing it in the 60’s (Miss Garson’s costume choices are also from the early 60’s). It sticks in my memory because Red’s Freddie and Jackie Gleason’s Poor Soul were my favorites especially at Christmas. That same reviewer commented about another Freddie special. It is titled “Freddie the Freeloader’s Christmas Dinner”. It was broadcast on HBO in 1981 and then rebroadcast on PBS in the early 90’s when I recorded it on vhs. Along with Red, it stars Vincent Price, Imogen Coca and a very cute dog who might be the original Benji (there’s no mention of the dog in the credits so I can’t say for certain but the dog is well trained). Unfortunately it has never been released on dvd (or even vhs) as near as I can tell. I transfered my home vhs to dvd as soon as that technology was available to me and endure the less than perfect quality every year because it is my favorite. I will continue to search in the hope that the Red Skelton estate releases an official version on dvd. It would be wonderful to have it, Freddie and the Christmas Doll, Freddie and the Plight Before Christmas and Freddie Gets 90 Days, plus the shorter black and white Freddie Christmas skits all in one collection.

Dull – The Phantom –
I suppose that if you’re a huge Red Skelton fan–and I’m not–this DVD would be a great find. I’m a fan of Christmas specials, and when viewed as that, this DVD is three stars and that’s being generous.

The primary feature here is “The Plight Before Christmas” from 1981 (yep, Skelton still was active then–despite a ridiculous joke about “Cassius Clay” this special didn’t originate in the mid ’60s) featuring Red as Freddie the Freeloader along with guest star Greer Garson. Garson gets mistaken for a panhandler herself through a mixup, and hilarity ensues. Not really…Skelton is his usual cornball self, and it just isn’t funny. It all comes off as being quite tired.

Interestingly, this special came several years before another Freddie the Freeloader Christmas one with Vincent Price that I think is far superior. Ran on HBO in the early ’80s and I’ve not been able to locate it anywhere since…I don’t think that a recording exists for sale.

The other items on the DVD, essentially afterthoughts, arent’ even worth viewing. In some cases the audio has been replaced and the video–probably found in some old closet somewhere–is atrocious.

A special treat for the holiday season – Midwest Book Review – Oregon, WI USA
Red Skelton Christmas offer the holiday-themed show “The Plight Before Christmas” and the extras “The Pledge of Allegiance”, “The Thanksgiving Turkey”, “Frozen Freddie”, “Freddie and the Carolers”, “Red Talks About Santa and Stair Climbing”, and “Freddie Gets 90 Days”. All DVDs are authorized by the Red Skelton estate, and all offer rip-roaring good clean fun. A special treat for the holiday season, for family viewing or as a gift, both the two volume Red Skelton: America’s Clown Prince and Red Skelton Christmas would make enduringly popular additions to any community library DVD collection.
